Cordelia
She smiles as she watches the children greet Kenna. As she speaks with her little brother, Cordelia discreetly wipes a tear before it could fall.

When Kenna asks Kenrich about Myxti, she looks nervously at him. This was not something they had anticipated. But his story, even though she knew it well, touched her. She smiles at him over Kenna's head.

"And Hastings is better for it."

She crosses back to the settee and sits. As she does, she catches the look on Gina's face. Cordelia could see the dark haired woman was starting to connect the dots.

Kenna listened to his story and when there was silence she realized she had stopped bouncing her brother and that everyone was looking after Cordelia interjected her small part about Hastings.

She blinked.

"Oh, I had no idea" was all that came out. She looked at Gina, pleading for her to continue the conversation somehow. The silence was deafening.

He pulls his fool hat off and crunches it in his hands, unwilling to talk for fear that he might start stammering. He walks toward her and soaks in the beauty he had nearly forgotten since it had been quite awhile that they had laid even eyes on one another.

He could see the ship then, the way her eyes had caught the color of the waters on some days, and how she was so quiet but watchful. She'd never grown weary on that trip. He'd wake and see her first, busy with something or other. She had slender fingers, delicate wrists. She smelled of suckles, the finest perfumes of flowered honey.

Her lips, soft pink and swollen like ripe fruits on nimble trees. He dared not think of what it would be like to touch them to his own, he'd surely pass out like a feeble old nanny with ill conviction.

Gods what prayer he would have to pray later for his tantamount of lust.

He calmed his thudding heart with an inner voice that cried out and if truly existing, sought about slapping him on the cheeks till he had sense enough to be serene.

Think of something to settle you, it said.

Alright, how about a cow chewing it's cud?

No.

The Hens clucking on an early morn and the dog wetting a corner spot.

No.

Something else, you milky eyed stall mucker! It Yelled, get out of the barn with it!

Hmm, he spent hours in the barn though. This was going to take a minute.

He realized she was waiting and the first thing that popped into his head was how she didn't seem unhappy to see him. That was what finally did it.

"Miss Lori, it does my heart well to see you once again" he said. No more cows, no more chickens, only the dizzy drunk feeling he had come to understand to mean he was "under the spell". That's what Bart had called it.

The awkward silence was deafening, and so Gina quickly tried to amend it. "My goodness Kenna! Look how big your little brother is getting!! I cannot get over how much he looks like your Father!" Oh! Wow, bloody hell! If her suspicions were correct regarding Cordelia and Lord Kenrich, then mentioning Geo was going to be just as awkward as mentioning Myxti! Well, she decided not to try and clumsily cover it up. It was out there, so be it.

Kenrich
Ken after finishing could feel the awkwardness of the moment, perhaps he had shared too much and became slightly embarrassed. He looked over at LadyGina has she tried to change the subject, feeling alittle bit of relief on that.

"Her Grace Cordelia has mentioned about spending Christomas in Merica this year" he said to Lady Kenna. I am hoping i will be able to travel with her, for the chance to see some people that i have missed since leaving there" he said to her. Trying to change the subject some.

Cordelia
She notes the subjest change, biting her lip in slight amusement. Eying Kenrich, "Ye better be able to travel with me, I need someone to keep me out of trouble." She pauses a moment, steeling her nerves, her fingers twisting into the folds in her skirt... "And who better to travel with than my suitor?"

She blushes and glances at Gina and Kenna before looking at Kenrich and offering him a small smile.

She was still trying to process the news that the couple she had been fond of was no more. It was easy to assume things when you hardly know what happens behind closed doors. There was a fair share of gossip that took place in this Kingdom, more often than none of it was truth, but this bit had never been a subject discussed as far as she knew. No one she crossed paths with had brought it to light. She wanted to comfort Kenrich with something more friendly than "Oh, I didn't know" but what can you say to someone when their marriage is over that would be of much comfort?

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" ~ No.

"Well I'm sorry to hear that"~ No.

"There are other fish in the sea" ~ Definitely not.

Kenna had been married awhile now and the fact of the matter was she had no idea what to say or what to think about his situation. If she put herself in his shoes it seemed surreal that she would ever have to go through such a thing. She never believed she would ever be married but she knew if it ever did happen, it would only be once and whoever the fellow turned out to be would be stuck with her till one or the other found a slab in a tomb.

There'd be no good reason to go to the church to end things. If he did something so awful that she couldn't bear the sight of him, never wanted to be known as his wife in public or private, then maybe she'd have to let one of her Uncle's know it was time for an "accident". Divorce just seemed too easy an out. Their vows included a commitment that said sickness and health, till death parts the two who became one. Well, that was the contract, and it never said anything particular about where the sickness and death came from, right?

Kenna felt Michael wriggling in her lap so she slid him sideways to let his small feet dangle. She nodded and smiled at Gina, waiting her turn to ALSO change the subject, but it was the last bit that threw her off.

Asking for a clarification was not needed. Only a blind man may have mistaken this and it was pure denial that had left her foolish enough to believe the blush in Cordelia's cheeks might be because it was warm in the room.

First instinct was to cringe but she did that inwardly so as to not offend either people she respected. It wasn't because they seemed happy, it wasn't because she thought them to be awful for their choice, it was because she wasn't ready to know about it.

Cordelia was a lovely woman and Kenrich was a kind and decently honorable man. Both worked tirelessly for the county and country. The match of the two seemed quite reasonable.

She tried to smile, but was failing miserably. Damnable emotions were never hid from her face. It was like a sign, a beacon rather, beaming out the words "I'm a selfish brat" but with a hint of embarrassment and shock.

She took great effort to make sure her voice came across stable and without judgement.

"Well then, that is.. quite a surprise" she nodded to them both "I am afraid I have missed much of the changes happening around me lately" she let Michael slide down and go after the floor he'd been fighting to get to and smoothed the crinkles of her dress against her knees. She went on "If you are both happy, I shall be happy for you, not that you need my permission of course. " she finished. There was truth to that, though in the back of her mind she could see her father's face and she felt so very much a traitor to him having just gave the right to another man to take his windows hand.

She convinced herself that he would tell her, honesty pure in his voice, that Cordelia had every right to be happy, with him or without. He might not have picked Kenrich, per-say, but he would never have agreed to having her waste away and fade in a room all alone.

She eyed Gina briefly, hoping her cousin would remember not to pass out. Gina could not have known or else she would have already mentioned something, warned her, or hinted at the very least.

She better not have known this whole time and not told me, Kenna thought.

The Christomas celebration was close, it was true, but she couldn't be bothered with thinking much about it right now.

"I had hoped you would consider combining our two families this winter season for the Christomas feast. I meant to write you this months beginning to suggest it, but we've been busy" she said absentmindedly, addressing Cordelia.

Suitor? Well, it would appear Gina's suspicions were correct this day.
Jah, please don't let my face reveal my battling emotions right now, she silently prayed.
Whilst Cordelia was a friend and she wished her happiness, she was also kin by marriage, and it was hard for Gina to see another man replace Geo. It had only been a few months since his death. But on the other hand, it had been a few months. And Cordelia was no doubt lonely. She didn't know how she would carry on if anything were to happen to Dranoel. She also knew that Geo would want Cordelia to be happy. She was a young, vibrant woman, who had a heart full of love to share. She should not be locked away in her room, mourning Geo and wasting away to nothing.
But....still it was hard to deal with.
She looked at Kenna and could tell that no matter how hard this was for her, her cousin was torn every which way possible trying to come to terms with the news.
Kenna invited Cordelia's family to the Mortimer Christomas Feast.... she was trying to fill the gap of silence...
Gina spoke up and said
"Aye, this is a bit of a surprise. But, as long as you're both happy, that is all that matters." She gave Kenna a comforting look, hoping her cousin knew she was there for her, should she need to talk.
"Christomas is right around the corner, isn't it? The time just flies by it seems. The children are growing so fast!" She should shut up now. She felt she was making the awkwardness worse....

Cordelia
She glances at them, eyes searching their faces. She had learned to read faces as Queen, a skill she used here. She could see the wars they were fighting. She could understand what they were feeling, it was something she had fought with herself at first. She knew they were probably thinking this was too soon. But in truth, not really. She had gotten involved with Viceroy after Unther's death far sooner than she had gotten involved with Kenrich.

She reaches out a hand tenatively, touching Kenna lightly on the arm. She had wanted to tell them first, before the gossip got to them.

She nods, "Aye, the time does seem to fly. Christosmas is just around the corner."

Kenrich
Ken listened as both ladies spoke, he felt relieved to hear what both of them had too say. They seemed accepting of the idea, after Cordelia had mentioned suitor to them

"Aye Christomas is coming around the corner" he said Though he looked at the ladies. "If i may say something on the other matter of me and Cordelia. "I will say this she is your family and you being accepting of us means a lot to me, and for that thank you" he said. Looking at Kenna as he could maybe sense some hesitation if just a little bit about them. "I can i never expected to find happiness after what happen to me and Myxti, i was content to be alone till the end of my days, and then if like a gift from Jah Cordelia appeared when i needed someone the most.

"Though i will say that this didn't happen over night, both of us were going through a lot she loosing His Majesty Vice, may jah rest his soul and me loosing Myxti. She offered friendship to me after she passed through Lichfield and after only that and it was some time that i began to grow found of her, though ill admit i held those feelings back for sometime out of feeling guilty because of His Majesty Vice passing. " he said. "Though i will say this since i have spent time with her after moving down to Sussex, i couldn't see myself with anyone else, we share so much in common and we both have such a love for this country" he said smiling looking at Cordelia, then back to the ladies. "I will say this you have my word that ill be there for her till jah takes be away" he said

Kenna felt the warmth Cordelia conveyed in her eyes. She returned those unspoken words when she met the woman's gaze. She ignored the fit her insides wanted to throw and focused on right now. It was just another unexpected thing that happens and she had to decide to pick her words and actions carefully from here on out. As long as they had each other, these sharp curves and new beginnings would come out as they were meant to. It would be hard enough to get through the coming holidays without driving a wedge between the family over something such as this.

Gina was saying her part and in her answer as well as her fidgeting, it was obvious they were both of like mind. It was funny how when her cousin got nervous, she did that.

Kenrich was talking again. Good that he wasn't shutting them out and being all stone lipped. He was trying, had to give him the benefit of that.

Kenna understood the chance the woman had been taking coming here, and how it exposed them all to change in more ways than they could even admit. She would not allow Cordelia to suffer judgement, not from her or anyone else for that matter. Who was she to tell her own step-mother how to love? or who to love?

Poor Kenrich was sounding like he was listing reasons for their courtship to have merit, as if maybe he were worried that everyone might think less of it somehow. Kenna suddenly realized that this must be why she felt so tired all the time, keeping the pace of holding high titles in the eyes of your peers could really suck the life out of you.

She could imagine that even if they were all ok with this, happy even, that somewhere some wench of heiress or grand lady with high airs would still cluck her tongue and shake her hollow head about it. Indeed her black dots for eyes would strain to their greatest lengths to look down her nose and be the pot that called the kettle black.

It mattered not anymore. For half of those who would be the dog that bit had already been the bitch in the alley long before they began their incessant howling about Kenna's family. It's not like the Mortimers or any of their family friends were stranger to the popular opinion that they were demon spawn from birth, and nothing good ever came from them. It had become a running joke at suppers. The more they stirred the gossiping minxes the more someone else was free from their angst, so alls merry there, aye?

Enough of this thinking. Time to give peace of mind.

"Lord Kenrich, as I said, and I am sure we all feel this way, if you two being together is what makes you both happy then I see no reason why you need give reason for it. Not to me or to anyone else. Be prepared for others to say what they will because that is how some will always be. I realize that we all have responsibilities to our lands or properties, to the courts of London, to the King" she paused "to ourselves in so much as we must be mindful of what we say and how things appear to be, but you will never do enough to make everyone approve. With Cordelia having been a widow some would expect her to be near death for at least ten years, sorrowful and mourning. Some might say she should never have the rights to marriage again. I would say that measuring your life by what others believe is the last thing either of you should be trying to do. We've only got this life. It's too short for either of us to be mucking up our hearts with guilt and holding back from love because we might be made a mockery. I think my father would want his son to have a man to help raise him, someone to protect Fiona and Cordelia, someone to love them. You say you give your word that you will be here till Jah takes you away..? Well then, answer me this. What punishment will you promise to be taken against you by this family if you should not make good on your word? Kenna asked, and she was serious. The only people opinion that truly mattered were those involved in Cordelia's life and in her future. He'd needed to be aware of that.

Drestakil
In his life Drestakil had done many things. He had been a soldier, a student, a teacher, a ship captain, a member of a ship's crew, a slave, a warlord, a baker, a field hand...he couldn't think of anything that made him feel better or be more pleased with himself than being the beloved of Lady Sara Jane de Phoenix.

Drest galloped along easily, moving with his horse's movements. He liked riding through the countryside this time of year. The air was cool and fresh. There was almost always a breeze when he stopped to water his horse. About an hour ago he had stopped in a small glade to eat some bread and cheese. He had tied the horse to a small tree, sat down against a larger one and rested. It was a wonderful feeling to just sit and listen. The movement of the leaves, tree limbs, after a while there were small animals moving around. He looked up at the sky...not a cloud in sight and it was the deepest, most amazing blue he'd ever seen.

Was it actually that blue or was he seeing everything through the eyes of love? Someone said love is blind. So why did colors look brighter? Why was it that he heard sounds more clearly? Why, even scents seemed sharper. He could smell the grass crushed beneath his boots.

Drest shook his head and leaned back against the tree trunk. He closed his eyes and calmed himself, breathing slow and easy. The small sounds of life were all around him. He listened and relaxed, all but dozing off to sleep. It would be nice to take a short nap. But, he couldn't. He needed to get to Mortimer Castle before dark. If he was lucky, his things would already be there. He could set about making himself at home.

And home it would be, for him. Mortimer Castle was the one place where he could actually settle down and live and not worry about going anywhere else. Not since he had settled down with Elizabeth all those years ago had he felt that way about any place. Mortimer Castle was a wonderful place to live. Now that he was thinking about it, it would be a great place to bring a new wife. There was more than enough room for kids. The place was large enough that his whole family could live there and not see one another for a week at a time. Or see each other every minute of the day if they so chose.

Drest shook his head and got up, mounted his horse and got out to the road. He looked up and down it. No one in sight. Which was probably good. He urged his horse up to a gallop and soon the towers of the castle were in sight. It would be good to get home.

Ken listened to Kenna and nodded what she said made sense to him and when she asked what punishment would be he allow to him from the family should he break his word, he thought for a moment before speaking.

"I would accept whatever punishment you all see fit on me" he said to her. He was serious on that when he gave his word he stood by it and he was a man of honor as well. He would not leave Cordelia and would take care of her as long as she allowed him too. He thought he was that sure of his feelings though he hadn't even shared that much with Cordelia yet.

Gina listened to the exchange between Lord Kenrich and her cousin. Kenna was correct in what she was saying about people speaking ill of Cordelia for taking a suitor. Those people, in her opinion, have most likely done even worse than whatever awful thing they think Cordelia has done. There was a saying that said people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. However there were some in this Kingdom who chose to throw boulders. Those people should take a long hard look at themselves and remember the phrase Judge not lest ye be judged. There was also a saying she loved, and that was Mind ye own business! Though there were some that could not do that. There were some that were not happy unless they had their nose jammed as far as possible into everyone elses business so that they could run and wag their forked tongue to any that would listen.
Gina heard Kenna ask him what punishment he would take if he broke his word to not leave Cordelia. Some might think that a question in jest, but Gina knew her cousin meant it as a question that needed an answer. Gina also knew why Kenna asked it. She heard Kenrich's answer and waited to see if this was a satisfactory answer for her cousin.

She nodded, jaw set and still serious.

"I mean no disrespect in the thought that I seem threatening. It's really just simple talk. See, Cordelia married into this family and is still bound to us no matter which path she chooses to take from here on out because that is how we Mortimer's see fit to be. We've had our fair share of bad luck and people who come in and out like the wind, leaving a wake of destruction. We're very hard headed. We like things so so. We don't like half-hearted commitments or unfaithful snakes. We appreciate honesty and honor. As you claim, we do so agree. We take your word as your bond. I won't say anymore on it besides to tell you that your card is played. From here on out, you will receive kindness from this House, our kin, and even our methods of protections. Should you break contract.. well" she paused "..you'll need to remember you've given permissions for us to seek you out. Jah's grace, pray that never has to come to pass" she leaned in as if telling him a secret that everyone could hear "I have an uncle who is quite the cut throat if he needs to be. Sweet as a kitten the rest of the time, just so long as no one lays a finger on us ladies" she smiled and winked.
