"There was a fight in Wigtown...", he began, while staring at his pint of ale, "a few days before the last Yule celebration. Well... it was out of town, in the forest between Wigtown and Dumfries. Two armies... one belonging to the noble lord who killed my parents many years ago, and one to his own grandson... they fought against each other..." He paused briefly as he recalled that day. "My sister and I had just arrived in town that day to confront the old man", he continued, "and we stumbled upon the fight. Jassy insisted we should climb up a tree and stay hidden there, until we figure out how to proceed. I was too clumsy to make it up there though. The tree was too high for me." He closed his eyes and paused again.
"The old man's soldiers reached us", he added after a while, "before we managed to do anything. Three arrows hit Jassy on her back... I think it was three, because I removed that many from her later myself, but it could be more. I can't remember... The only thing she managed to do was to pull me back down and cover me with her body." He could still remember that day's events as if they had happened only a few minutes before his visit to 'Kel's Bells'. He could still remember his sister's words: "Stay here... You'll be safe... Don't move... If they find you... play dead..." He sighed before speaking some more. "The grandson and I carried her to Wigtown's infirmary to tend to her injuries, as soon as the fight was over. No matter how serious her wounds were, I was confident she would make it. I'm a healer and she was strong and tough and she had prevailed during hard circumstances before. But..."
He stopped once more and sighed again. Keeping his eyes closed in a desperate attempt to prevent tears from forming up in his eyes, he tried hard to maintain his composure.

I came to work early, to set up the tables for the evening meals. Maxine had prepared sausages! I could hardly wait to try them with the fragrant herb and onion bread she had pulled from the oven earlier!
John Blackstone entered the tavern, already carrying a tankard of hot spiced wine. He sat at the bar and took a long drink, eyeballing Blythe as she went about her work. The lass had a thin sheen of perspiration on her upper lip, as she had just returned from the kitchen where Maxine roasted chestnuts on the hearth.

As he pulled off his heavy coat, hat, and furlined gloves, Blythe was impressed with his appearance. He sat down at the bar across from her and smiled.
