The Colony of Bath

In the Ducky...
Quote:
Rhiannon : ah, Rosa, how ya doing? hear you've been a bit sick lately
Rosalynn looks a little green around the gills so to speak
Rhiannon : oh dear...
Rhiannon looks around for a chamber pot, then finds a spitoon
Meda181 cringes
Rhiannon : Rosa? Are you okay?
Rosalynn : Aside from a queasy stomach, I ache or hurt
Rhiannon : where at, may I ask?
Rosalynn : when hugged
Rhiannon : AAAH
Rhiannon : tired at all lately?
Rosalynn : More like wiped out
Rhiannon : Hmmm... when was yer last mensus, if ya don't mind me askin' that?
Gregarious : lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala
Rosalynn : Twas before we were wed, I remember that
Rosalynn grins as Greg blushes
Meda181 chuckles at Greg reaction.
Rhiannon : all that long time ago?
Rhiannon : wow...
Rhiannon : start picking out names, cousin, methinks yer with child
Meda181 : Such an interesting 'Melody'.
Rosalynn nods looking perplexed
Meda181 taps Greg.
Rosalynn : Oh oh, methinks Saj isn't quite ready for that
Meda181 : You can unplug your ears now.
Rhiannon grins and gingerly hugs Rosa
Gregarious : I can't hear you
Gregarious : huhh
Gregarious : ok
Rhiannon : he'd best be gettin' ready, then
Meda181 : lol
Rosalynn laughs
Meda181 : Men get so squeamish around kids.
Rhiannon pokes Greg and yells in his ear, "SHE'S EXPECTIN', NOTHING NASTY ABOUT THAT!"
Rosalynn : I'll let you tell him as when he passes out from shock, I don't have a clue how to revive him
Gregarious : Congratz m'lady
Gregarious :
Rosalynn blushes
Meda181 : A pitcher of water does wonders.
Rosalynn : thank you
Rhiannon : haha! I'll tell him, then, I will
Meda181 : You may have to fight with Britta for midwivery rights. lol
Rhiannon : I've got Cousin rights, I do
Rosalynn : The more the merrier lol

Sajanzv enters the tavern and takes a seat at the table.
Meda181 giggles, and pushes a pitcher of water toward Rhia.
Sajanzv : I am a wee bit busy, you know
Sajanzv : smelling salts?
Rhiannon : oh aye...
Rhiannon : ye may need 'em
Sajanzv : Rosalynn, Meda, I am seeing a whole bunch of newcomers on my list
Meda181 : 'Newcombers'. Interesting choice of words..........
Rhiannon grins
Rhiannon : I had a similar thought
Sajanzv : combers?
Sajanzv : hehe

At about this time, English words temporarily deserted Rhiannon in her excitement in her cousin's news-

Quote:
Rhiannon : Sajan, ach yn cerdded at bod dad
Rhiannon : err...
Sajanzv : lol
Meda181 : Close enough
Rhiannon : Rosalynn ydy yn cerdded at ca baban!
Sajanzv : I heard ya, sis
Rhiannon : you're gonna be a father!
Sajanzv : I am delighted
Sajanzv offers a round to all!
Rhiannon laughs
Sajanzv offers glass of water to Rosalynn who does not want any more alcohol.
Sajanzv offers a round to all!
Meda181 : Ah, he's no fun. lol
Rhiannon : now is the time ye start using yer mayoral influence to order in whatever Rosa be cravin'
Rhiannon winks

Later on that night, worn out from the events at the tavern, Rhiannon pens a simple note-
Quote:
Sevare, 'm cara- Buais dde! Rosalynn ydy ag blentyn. Sajan ydy yn cerdded at bod dad!
Translation:
Quote:
Sevare, my love- I was right! Rosalynn is with child. Sajan is going to be a father!

Ah me lil piggies, how are we today? Growing nicely.

You would not believe the happenings this past day. Lord Balboa has returned. I've never seen the like. He had a whole town travelling with him. Woman by the hundreds tossing flowers at his feet as he entered and the most wonderous music......

The Lady Rosalynn graced me with a smile later in the tavern. There were many woman and they were talking about...uh things you will know about later. Anyway I politely excused myself from this most private conversation. Later she told her husband she is with child! The mayor seemed pleased.

And lastly I received a smile and a laugh from she with the rolling green eyes.

I'm afraid in all the excitement I've forgotten to eat! I'm not feeling well, but I have a field to harvest for a fair wage so to work I go. Eat my friends, grow my lovelies, make me proud.

The end of the day found Meda once again in her favorite oak at the edge of town, writing as usual. That is, she was trying to write. There were so many things on her mind, that she was having trouble focusing today.

The tavern had been busy, especially once news of Lady Rosa’s expectancy spread. Bath was growing, in more ways than one. Happy news was welcome to Meda. She’d been rather irritated to return home earlier and find her belongings in a shambles, with an innocent-yet-devilish little fox sitting in the middle of the chaos. Dunn Jr was always so sweet when with Jean and Dunn, Meda had offered to watch him while they travelled without hesitation. But between Jr and Starling, the past few days had been spent in constant cleaning and repair. Apparently she brought the impishness out in everyone. Meda hoped that Lady Rosa wouldn’t mind, as she had offered to help care for the new babes when needed. With her sister’s marriage also in the works, it was possible Meda would be helping with several broods. Of course, despite the impression she tried to give everyone, she didn’t mind a bit. She’d always enjoyed caring for her younger cousins.

Thoughts of family returned Meda to her task of penning a wedding song for her sister. Meda’s confidence had increased over the last month, but she was still nervous about performing in public. She decided she would ask Britta for that herbal concoction to calm her, just in case Jean did ask her to sing.

Still unable to focus, she turned her attention to the road below her, leading out of town. She was worried for her sister and her band of travelers. A soldier had been into the tavern several days earlier, warning of danger on the roads. And news from other towns was not calming either. Perhaps she was now living in a wood town, but Meda still knew when a storm was brewing.

She prayed her families would weather it well...........

To long in the tavern me lil piggies. My head throbs like you wouldn't believe.

I've picked up a fish from somewhere? Don't recall buying it, but there it is. I really need to stay away from the beer I'm afraid.

We met a couple ladies travelling through town this evening. Enchanting creatures and obviously high born. True ladies. Impossing personalities. I hope they are safe in their journey. Trouble is on the roads these days.

I was also graced by she with the rolling eyes, but I had to ask.

I'm not worthy to be in the same room as a lady of any of their stature, but I will be, with your help of course my lovelies. Eat my friends, grow my pets, make me proud.

Well despite the headache it's off to work I go. Fair work for a fair wage my friends. I will work hard for my employer and you will work hard for me. All will be as it should be in the world.
-fromENBritta
Walking thru the woods, when she ought to be working, Britta had a sense of being watched. Turning and seeing no one she continued. She knew many spirits of the forest and she was never afraid when she went into even the deepest, darkest part of the wood to gather hard to find herb and roots. She had always seen ghosts. They were comforting to her and she always felt blessed knowing they were with her. Her familiarity of the deep woods sometimes came in handy for the town folks who needed to travel farther along a path to try to find a way round the bandits who had been on the roads of late.

She knew that there was a possibility of Jean asking Meda to play and sing at her upcoming wedding, Knowing her friend Meda, she needed to begin brewing a charm for her nerves. She would offer it to her friend before she had a chance to ask. In that way, Meda might be less concerned about being shy. Meda...What a sweet and giving spirit she possed. Britta had never seen her anything less than perfectly lovely in her thought and actions unless she was being teased but she could hold her own against the men in this town, especially since Bath had the best of men in all the kingdom. They were all so well trained, fit and strong, and they looked out for the women of the townwhether they be married or not. Brit felt she could call on anyone of them for help (and she had many times). They always were gracious and helpful.

She also made the decision to give Jean and Dunn the EXACT same wedding blessing and gift that she had given Rosalynn and Sajan. It had worked like a 'charm' for them. When she made Jeans fertility pocket she would throw in a little of Meda's charm so that Jean might sing round her new home as a newly weddded lady. She spent a moment imagining Dunn listening to his wife's voice and wondering if he could love her more of be any more lucky that the luckiest man in Bath.

Hopefully the babes that were expected in the town would come close so that she and Rhiannon would need to divide the time between them as the town midwives. Britta had much experience and had never lost a mother yet. There was a still babe one time but there was nothing to be done about it. It had not formed correctly in the womb. The mother had gone on to have 7 more healthy little ones, mostly boys which was good luck.

Britta had been so lonely lately. Yes, she had aquaintances in the tavern but the one she sought was not to be found. She knew that one day she would meet another who was able to maybe see some sort of spark in her that she, herself, couldn't see. She was plain and quiet (unless you caught her in the tavern). Ale seemed to put her on the bawdy side of the table. Britta enjoyed ale quite a bit, especially since she knew about hangover droughts and salts. Maybe tonight she would carry some with her in case she might find Scribe, Lusitani or Lofinger in the tavern.

Her little mouse was still alive. That was a good thing. and she had enough money today to hire someone to work the field. Life today was not bad, rather pleasant in fact.

Well me lil piggies how are we today? It has been a bit of a slow day today. However, I have been drummed into the Witshire Army!

A chance to give back to this town, I could not pass up. The Captain of the De Balboa House guard is back, but has not had a chance to explain my duties there to me as yet. I will have to catch up to him soon. That house is very intimidating. It's all I can do to keep the shoulders back and gut in .

I pray for our friends travelling. The roads are dangerous here abouts. Most of the patrol except Lord bfp returned today. He should be back tomorrow. Perhaps I will learn a bit more about my duties to him.

Lots to learn my friends lots to come in the future.

Eat my friends, grow my pets, make me proud. It's off to the mines for me. All we can do to give back.
Rosalynn
Rosalynn retrieves her journal from its hiding spot and sets it on the table and after fixing herself a cup of tea and some bread and butter, she sits down to write.

Quote:
Dear Bart,

Well, my suspicions have been confirmed by my cousin Rhi and I am with child. I had thought my new husband would pass out at this unexpected news but he took it much better than expected. The decision regarding names is entirely his to decide, which will give him something to think on over the coming weeks. By the new year, we shall have a new member of our family to welcome.

Thankfully the nausea has eased up but now my, and I blush even just writing this, breasts are tender and I come close to jumping through the roof when hugged or held too tightly because of the discomfort. I've taken to daily walks through town as the season is changing and there is a decided briskness to the air. Spot usually accompanies me and goes off on her own at times to seek out truffles, her favorite snack.

Sir Dunn, his mother, Jean and Elvira have returned from Gloucester. Brad remained behind for an extra day but hopefully will rejoin Elvira on the morrow. Funny things have been going on in the tavern as Gregarious has been ogling the bartender Meda lately and it tickles me to watch and listen to the verbal sparring that goes on amongst them. Now if only to find a decent man to matchmake my other retainer to, all would be well in my world as then all would be as happy as I am.

The election goes well which both excites and terrifies me at the same time as I've never held a position like it before. I need to keep reminding myself that I can do this although I doubt I will do as good a job as Sajan did while in office. I'm terrified that I will do something wrong unintentionally. Oh well, in the meantime I'll just pester him often with questions as they come to mind and do the best I can. I have already notified the Court of Appeals Head Justice in regards to my vying for the mayor's position in Bath, so he is aware he may lose yet another justice soon.

I've started collecting clothes for the baby and have stored them where I keep my journal after removing several of the blankets to make room. It helps to be a weaver so that I can make most of what I will need. From what I've heard, another cousin is expecting shortly but it is nice to know that she and I both will be well-attended by Rhi and Britta, the appointed mid-wives for Bath. I've no idea what birthing a baby entails but Rhi's children are so adorable that surely there is not much to it.

I remain your faithful writer of events,

Rosa

Finishing up her writing, she blows gently on the page to dry the ink so it doesn't smear, closes the journal and places it back in the chest under the baby clothes and blankets stored inside. With a dreamy smile on her lips, she holds up one of the most exquisite pieces of clothing found thus far for the baby, an embroidered christening gown with matching bonnet suitable for a boy or girl. After setting it back in amongst the other clothing, she closes the lid on the chest and returns to the table, tidies it up real quick and goes out the door to head for the tavern. She has curtailed her drinking of beer of late but thrives on the conversation of the other townsfolk who come in to visit. She's already put up the sign that she is closing the loan office as it has been seldom used since the fiasco with Cwalen, but she doesn't want there to be any question of misappropriation of funds or such. Rosa smiles to herself as there was only 1/2 a loan left out and she has declared the debt paid in full.

She sends up a small prayer that her intentions not be misconstrued this time as the money was given as a gift, not as charity. Walking down the road, she smiles and waves to the others she sees along the way.

Rhiannon was out in her garden picking the last of the season's veggies for winter storage when a young maid came running up the path.

"Lady Rhiannon! Come, make 'aste! The child's a-comin'!"

Within moments, Rhiannon was on her horse, the maid sitting astride behind her, holding on for dear life, galloping to Amy's house.

Running into the house, Rhiannon almost slid on a puddle in the middle of the floor, only saved by the girl running behind her. Quickly patting the girl's arm in thanks, she gave her a list of things to do to help.

"Clean this puddle up, then get as many towels and clean rags as possible."

Rhiannon ran up the stairs, taking two at a time, searching for Amy's boudoir. A low moan told her exactly where her cousin was.

Rhiannon held onto Amy's hand during the contraction. When it was over, the maid Rhiannon had sent for towels arrived with them. Rhi saw she also had the sense to bring a pitcher of water.

Rhiannon took a cloth from the maid and wetted it from the pitcher. Patting Amy's forehead with it, she murmered calmly to her.

"Let's get you out of that dress. You can't be too comfortable in all those petticoats."

She helped Amy up, then unlaced her dress, helping her strip down to her chemise. Helping her back into bed, Rhiannon settle Amy in comfortably. While undressing, her cousin hadn't had any more contractions, which told Rhi that the baby would take its sweet time.

"Ssshhh..."

Rhiannon spoke in a calm, soothing tone. She motioned to the maid to start heating up the water she brought, and patted at Amy's forehead with the damp cloth again.

"Bod dawelu. Be calm. Fear will only make the pain worse."

She instructed the maid to wet a towel with the steaming water, and placed it on Amy's belly to help relieve the pain.

"Amy, when the pain is the worst, breath like this-"

She took two short, quick breaths from her nose, and let it out in one long one from her mouth.

"That should help take your mind off the pain."

Rhiannon noticed the strained look on Amy's face, and she realized what she was doing. She manuvered Amy about on the bed, dangling her legs over the side of the bed so that gravity would help.

"Use the contractions, Amy. Push really, really hard during the contractions, then rest and breathe in the intervals."

She positioned herself at Amy's knees and lifted her chemise a bit. What she saw surprised her- a small globe of dark hair peeking. Quickly, she grabbed a towel and caught the writhing little being just as it slid into the world. A loud wail set up, both from Amy and the child.

Amy collapsed back into the bed, and Rhiannon set the child on her chest.

"It's a girl!"
