The Colony of Bath

-fromENmeda181
"Ah-ah-AH-CHOOO!!" Meda sneezed loudly as the chill assaulted her nose. She looked out her door in dismay."Snow?? Who said it could snow??" She sneezed again, and retreated indoors to the fireside. She glanced around her home, taking a mental inventory. She had been shopping the day before, fortunately, so she had enough food and wood for at least two days. Hopefully the snow would be somewhat melted by then, enough to get into town at least. The pigs had feed and water. Who knows? Maybe they would enjoy the new white 'mush'. She didn't have anything to drink but milk, but it was going to have to do, for there was no way she was venturing away from the fire today.

Meda looked out. She and snow got along as well as a lit candle in the wind. Even in the taverns, on a cold day everyone knew where to find her; on the floor by the fire. Both Greg and her brother had teased that one day she would get too close and go up in flames.

Suddenly Meda had the oddest feeling; double homesickness. She was extremely eager to get home and see her family in Canterbury; yet at the same time, she was loathe to leave her family in Bath. 'Twas an odd delima indeed.

Another sneeze, and a cough escaped her throat. "Wonderful Meda. Now you're worrying yourself sick. What a wonderful way to prepare for a trip. Hrmph!" She set about cooking up one of her mother's special stews, grateful that she'd added a fish to her pantry as well.

Gregarious
It had taken some convincing, but Berit was calm now. Troy was sore but otherwise fine and Sierra had only been restrained.

The disconcerting news was that Piran was not dead. Berit had thought Troy the kidnapper as there was no body at the site when he got there, just the wagon tracks in and out. Troy confirmed he had set an arrow into Piran but Piran then managed to get to the woods. Troy thought it would have been a simple thing to track him down, but he did not want to leave Gregarious alone just to have Piran possibly double back, so he had let him go.

Troy related the story that Piran had told. Gregarious confirmed the facts for Berit. The boarder clash was not of either clans making. Both had done exactly what Asa had planned and weakened themselves in the process. Berit and Troy were no fools. They saw that the situation must be rectified. But neither were in charge of their clans. Berit was respected but young. Troy was heir but not ruler.

Well our best bet is for Berit to try and convince his clansmen that the battle must stop. Troy, you and I will try to convince your father of the same thing. We must go to talk with your father.............

Having laid in the snow with Sparhawk for what seemed like days, ArcaneJill was quite cold and wet by the time they got up to continue on their journey through town. There was no answer at Amy's or Rhiannon's. At Amy's, the door had been knocked down. Nothing else inside seemed to be disturbed though, so they hoped she and her child were safe. Gregarious' place was empty, as they expected it. They knocked at the next house and a miserable-looking Meda answered the door.

"AhChooo!"

Jill glanced at her friend's reddened nose. "Poor Meda! We're checking on everyone. Do you need anything?"

"No, no. It's just a cold. You both look icy! Won't you come in?"

Sparhawk looked at Jill and then back at Meda. "No thank you. We wouldn't force you to entertain while you're sick." He smiled. "We'll continue on. Send word if you need anything. Don't go out in this weather while you don't feel well!"

Meda nodded and sneezed, closing the door as they trudged away through the snow.

There was a goodly space between Meda's house and the next in the direction they were traveling. While Meda lived fairly close to town, most of the intervening buildings seemed to be unoccupied stores and workshops. The next house belonged to Sajanzv and Rosalynn. Jill's teeth had started chattering shortly after leaving Meda's. Rosalynn opened the door, appearing to have a fairly full house already and a cheery welcoming fire.

Jean woke and looked out the window. The ground was covered in snow. Luckily, Jean was warm. She threw on her warm shall and walked over to her sister's place and knocked on the door before entering.

"Hello sister, how.." she said, but was interupted by a sneeze. Jean laughed "Oh dear that doesn't sound good. Let me make you a hot cup of tea. I brought some with me" Jean said, while taking off her shall.

Jean took the tea out of her carry pouch and boiled some water.

"Ah, now where were we..."

Rhiannon sat and took a sleeping child from Rosa. The babe stirred, but slept on, sweet as anything.

"Eight days, cousins... Eight days until my sister is married. Oh, I am so excited for her!" Rhiannon grinned widely and recalled the time when she, too, was a blushing bride. Not long after, her son was born.

Similarities between sisters who had never before lately been in each other's lives were mysterious things.

"Thank you Jean." Meda frowned irritably. "Ugh! I hate the winter. Rain is one thing, but snow totally different." Then she sighed, and half-smiled. "Though I'm probably the only one who thinks that way. I imagine half of the town are having snowball fights right now."

She sneezed again. "I'm not sure which I dislike more; being cold or having a cold. Ah, well. So how are you doing Sister? I haven't had a chance to talk with you lately."

"I'm doing well, I do miss my husband though." Jean said, while pouring them both a cup of tea and sitting down at the table. "So what is this trip your going on?" Jean asked.

There was a big bang on the door and both the women jumped. Jean got up and opened the door just a crack. She quickly closed it again. Laughing Jean said, "Looks like you were right about the snowball fight sis"

The moment that Jean had closed the door there had been another bang right after. Jean and Meda laughed. Meda then started coughing. Jean went over to the closet and pulled out an extra blanket and wrapped it around her sister.

"Mind if I stay with you for a few days until you get better, it's loney at my place to." Jean asked.

After being with Jill I went back home. As I came do my door I say a note on it that said urgent in big letters. As I read the note it had to do with KoP. I quickly gathered my things and wrote a note for Jill. I rode out quickly only with enough time to leave the note on Jill's door saying I was going to Bridgewater and Bristol on Army's orders. I left the city like a ghost in the dark with Clara and Lord_Rian at my heels. When I got to Bridgewater I had heard someone had been killed and another robbed. I told the army regement that was in the town and head to Bristol with Lord_Rian again, saying goodbye to Clara. We went to to Bristol and when we got there I met my patrol of Noresor and some others from Gloucester including Hypno. I said hi and bye to the for maybe the robber went to Chard. Lord_Rian and I left back for Bridgewater again. We started feeling like we have gone in circles which we were but kind of tired from traveling. I met a person on our travel to Bridgewater handing him a note. I told him to find Gooch and hand him the note. The note told Gooch to wait for me so we could get this person who is robbing people. I then handed him another note to him for Jill in Bath saying how much I missed her. Lord_Rian and I talked on our way back about our lives and who we have fancied over the years. Resting only to eat and give the horses some water.

Since his arrival in Bath, the snow had kept him in the town proper. He was happy to see the break in the weather and see the sun shining brightly on his fourth day in town. The snow was still too deep to work the team, but not so deep to keep him from exploring the countryside just outside of town. He took the road east and then north following the road along the River Avon. The river looked very scenic draped in its winter coverings. He stopped at a bluff overlooking the river, not far from town to enjoy the majestic view. His enjoyment of this beauty was overshadowed by a flock of ravens along the shoreline below gathered upon the rocks.

He has hated these birds since he was a child. Throughtout his life he has had a running battle with them, inflicting pain and suffering upon them at every opportunity. He dug in the road to get several pebbles . He threw the pebbles at the birds. With warm satisfaction, he watched as the pebbles scared the birds away from their perches.

Basking in his victory he looked down at the area where the birds had been. There appeared to be some red cloth on one of the rocks where the birds were standing. He studied the red cloth for a few seconds and thought maybe they were trouser legs. Muleskinner knew that this person had to be from Bath and his family need to know his fate.

Muleskinner went back to town and got some rope and some heavy cloth, and the a couple of men out of the tavern. The group returned to the bluff and started preparations to have someone go down and investigate the rocks below. The other men refused to go down citing a myriad of excuses. Muleskinner climbed down the rope to where the red trousers lay.

The man's flesh had been torned apart by feeding animals. his clothes were torn and bloodied. Muleskinner had seen death before as it was a fact of life in these times. He could not help feel some pity for this unknown man and the way he met his end. He quickly wrapped the body in the cloths he had brought and secured them with a rope. While search the ground around the rock he uncovered a heavy gold ring. It was very expensive from the ornate design on the outside and inside he found some words inscribed " My Miracle of Creation" My Beloved Ellsbeth.

He slipped the ring into his pocket and helped get the remains up the bluff and returned to the church for proper burial.

Muleskinner knew of only one called Ellsbeth, he would return this to her at the first opportunity.

"A pair of my cousins, twins, are getting married at the turn of the year, and my brother threatened to come and get me himself if I didn't come." Meda rolled her eyes and grinned. "Not that he would succeed if he tried. But I am anxious to see everyone. It's been well over half a year since I've seen them. Unfortunately I'm leaving on the morrow, sick or not."

Meda saw the disappointment on Jean's face, and gave her a hug. "I'm sorry, Sis. I know its not the same, but you're more than welcome to stay here while I'm gone. I haven't seen Starling lately, so I'm sure you will be somewhat safe from chaos." She smiled and laughed. "I'll bet the snow scared him away as well."

She glanced out the window and noticed a group of men on the road, headed for town. One had a sizeable bundle in his arms. From that distance, she didn't recognize anyone. Well, she'd find out before she left in the morning. In the meantime, she returned to the fireside to continue her chat with her sister.

"Ah well you have a good reason to go then. Do you know when you'll be back." Jean replied. She sipped her tea and glanced out the window. In her mind she wanted to see that familar figure that she missed so much.

Jean snapped back to reality when her sister sneezed loudly. She laughed and said, "Sorry sis I was lost in a daydream. Thanks for letting my stay here but since your going away I shouldn't really be here. I will keep an eye on your place of course. In fact I should go and see if I can find Dunn Jr. I haven't seen the little one in months. No doubt he has a fox family of his own by now."Jean said, smiling.

Muleskinner went to the tavern with a two fold purpose. First, to find out wh the dead fellow was, and second, to return the gold ring to it's intended recipient. He could hear the laughter and the loud voices as he approached the tavern. As the door opened, the noise from within assaulted his ears three fold.

Muleskinner walked over to a table that would serve as a good vantage point and sat down. The tavern was full and it seemed everyone was fully involved in laughter and spirited conversations. He got comfortable in his chair and began his observations.

Almost immediately, he deduced that lady Ellsbeth was either the source or the cause of most of the commotion. She was shamelessly flirting and cavorting with anyone wearing a codpiece. Her behavior and demeanor would have raised an eyebrow or two among even the most seasoned room working bar wench veterans.

Lady Ellsbeth seemed to mingle effortlessly among all assembled in the room. She would ensarl each of her intended victims in her web of charms, then, move on to another, leaving the former bundled up and helpless until she returned for them. - She fed off the attention she recieved by being the center of attention.
-fromENmuleskinner
Muleskinner had seen enough of Lady Ellsbeth's antics. He walked over to her and placed the ring in front of her and told her it was intended for her. He knew she had heard his words and knew he was standing next to her. She chose to continue her cavorting and flirting with her charmed minions and not response to him. Muleskinner walked back to his seat and waited.

Minutes turned into hours, and Lady Ellsbeth never gave the ring the slightest bit of her attention. It was like the ring was a piece of feces and she could not soil herself with it. Having seen enough, Muleskinner determined she wanted no part of the ring can cared not for the spirit of love it was forged in. He walked back over to her place and picked up the ring again and pocketed it while returning to his seat.

Muleskinner moved about the room asking tavern regulars if they knew of anyone who might be missing or the inscription on the inside of the ring. It was revealed a suitor has not been seen for over a week. Lord Strangefellow was his name. He referred to lady Ellsbeth as a "miracle of creation" and he had what appeared to be a red cloth jewerly bag with him the night he was last seen.

Shortly after arriving in Bath, Lord Strangefellow started a whirlwind seduction/courtship of lady Ellsbeth and it appeared to have been successful. On the last night he was in, he arrived in good spirits and with an air of expectation. He started drinking when he arrived. It looked to others he was calming his nerves, while celebrating at the same time. He would take out the red bag several times and hold it in his hand. When asked about it, he would put it back in his pocket and smile at the questioner, telling them everyone will soon find out.

As the night grow longer, Lord Strangefellow seemed to become moody. He started drinking more and withdrew inside himself. Before stumbling out the door, he had quickly gulped several drinks.

It was not clear why it happened, but it was clear that Lord Strangefellow died by the river that night. Everyone who knew him expressed sorrow and a sense of loss. Several people raised toasts for the memory of him. It was clear that Lord Strangefellow would be missed by some. YES, some, not not ALL.

Lady Ellsbeth showed niether sorrow nor emotion at the news of her former suitor dermise. She didn't joined in nor offer a toast in his memory. Muleskinner had seen emotions in many faces of the grieving. Sometimes it was shock, other times it was denial. mostly, it was pain from the loss of someone dear. But the cold stonefaced indifference was a first for him. All he could think through his numb mind was, "She has got to be a b----h."

Muleskinner thanked everyone for thier help and excused himself from the tavern. He needed some air and distance away from Lady Ellsbeth. There was much to do before lord Strangefellow was to be buried and it looked like he would be the only one left to do it.

Despite a case of the sniffles and a nagging cough, Meda stayed up most of the night putting things in order. Not that there was anything to actually put in order, but she had done the same thing the night before she left Canterbury for Sevenoaks. Pretravel jitters, it seemed. Whether there was work to do or not, Meda had exhausted herself before dawn, and the sunrise found her snoozing in a pile of blankets by the fire. With no chores to do, and no reason to wake, she slept on quietly. When finally she yawned, and begin moving about, she was dismayed to find the sun high in the sky.

“Well, there goes half a day’s travel,” she chided herself. “Hmm. Maybe I should wait until the morrow.” But she quickly dismissed that idea, knowing if she waited, she would do the same thing as the previous night, and be a full day late in starting. Best get started now. She gathered her things, including a newly purchased spear and her staff, checked that her home was in order, and headed for town to buy some extra food rations.

She first stopped by the Town Hall to leave her last stack of welcome letters to be sent out. Then came the market, and a final stop in at the taverns. There she learned of the death of Strangefellow, not news she wished to hear when leaving town. Death was an unwelcome traveling companion in any form. After several inquiries, she found that the funeral would be held while she was away, so she made a mental note to pay her respects when she returned. She said goodbye to her friends, and headed out. Before leaving town, she paused at both Sierra’s and Greg’s house. At each she left a note for them to contact her in Canterbury when the returned. Inwardly she hoped that she might meet them on the road, returning home. But just in case, she left both her parents’ and her cousins’ address.

On the outskirts of town, at the edge of the forest, she paused by her favorite tree. She looked back up the road toward the village main. She sighed, and smiled, and then continued on her way.
