Sierra's cheeks turned a rosy pink and she lowered her eyes from his gaze. Her mind whirled in surprise and for a moment she tried to find the power to speak once more. Giangio searched her face, trying to read her reaction...he began to apologize and was clearly embarrassed. Hurt flashed in his eyes and she was woken out of her momentary daze. He had begun to back away from her and she grabbed his arm and looked into his eyes...
"Giangio...I, I....was not expecting that...I had no idea you thought of me that way." He started to mumble an apology again and she laid a finger across his lips to silence him.
"Just because it was unexpected, does not mean it was unwelcome. We have been friends for a while and I have always cared for and admired you. You are a good man, Giangio." And with that, she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him close. She felt his arms circle around her waist and pull her toward him. The she took a small step back and looked up into his face. He averted his eyes but she turned his head back so he was looking right at her. Then she leaned up and pulled his head down to meet her as she gently pressed her lips against his and held them there for a moment. They released their embrace and stood smiling at one another--both at a loss for words. Finally Giangio found his voice:
"I should go...it is late. We both need sleep. Did you need any help up the stairs? I could carry you up too!" Sierra smirked at his comment and they both laughed.
"Will you be alright for the walk home? You must be very tired!"
Giangio assured her he would be wide awake for some time yet...thinking about...things. They embraced once more and Giangio began his walk home...his walk a bit lighter than it had been before. Sierra watched him till he disappeared around the curve in the road. Then she went inside, climbed the stairs, and quietly tip-toed to her bedroom. She crawled under the covers and laid there thinking about....things, as well. Sleep would likely elude her tonight...
