The Colony of Bath

pnj
Sierra's cheeks turned a rosy pink and she lowered her eyes from his gaze. Her mind whirled in surprise and for a moment she tried to find the power to speak once more. Giangio searched her face, trying to read her reaction...he began to apologize and was clearly embarrassed. Hurt flashed in his eyes and she was woken out of her momentary daze. He had begun to back away from her and she grabbed his arm and looked into his eyes...

"Giangio...I, I....was not expecting that...I had no idea you thought of me that way." He started to mumble an apology again and she laid a finger across his lips to silence him.

"Just because it was unexpected, does not mean it was unwelcome. We have been friends for a while and I have always cared for and admired you. You are a good man, Giangio." And with that, she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him close. She felt his arms circle around her waist and pull her toward him. The she took a small step back and looked up into his face. He averted his eyes but she turned his head back so he was looking right at her. Then she leaned up and pulled his head down to meet her as she gently pressed her lips against his and held them there for a moment. They released their embrace and stood smiling at one another--both at a loss for words. Finally Giangio found his voice:

"I should go...it is late. We both need sleep. Did you need any help up the stairs? I could carry you up too!" Sierra smirked at his comment and they both laughed.

"Will you be alright for the walk home? You must be very tired!"

Giangio assured her he would be wide awake for some time yet...thinking about...things. They embraced once more and Giangio began his walk home...his walk a bit lighter than it had been before. Sierra watched him till he disappeared around the curve in the road. Then she went inside, climbed the stairs, and quietly tip-toed to her bedroom. She crawled under the covers and laid there thinking about....things, as well. Sleep would likely elude her tonight...

Jill got up and carefully made her way down the stairs. She limped to the kitchen and busied herself with tea and pastries. She wanted to surprise Sierra with breakfast, to thank her for waking up in the middle of the night to take care of her.

The sunlight streamed through the curtains of Sierra's bedroom window. The birds had long been celebrating the new morning, but it was only now that their song reached Sierra's ears. She savored the last few moments of the fading dream that had brought a smile to her lips. Her eyes slowly openned and she took a moment to focus. She looked to the foot of her bed and Luke was no where to be found--very odd. She climbed out of bed and grabbed her shawl that was hanging on a peg by the door. The floor was cold under her feet as she padded down the hall and peeked into Jill's room--empty. A perplexed expression found itself on Sierra's face as she went in search of Jill.

The stairs creaked an announcement of her arrival as she entered the living room. She then peered around the corner into the kitchen and found Jill hopping around on one foot setting items on a serving tray.

Sierra stifled a giggle at watching Jill but then set it aside so she could muster a stern voice:

"Jill! What is heaven's name are you doing? Are you trying to sprain your other ankle?"
Gregarious
Well me piggies how are you doing today.

Interesting news. Jill is running for mayor and Giangio is not it seems? Well I am sure Bath will not be the poorer for it even if the rolls where reversed as they were last election.

I have had a wondrous day my friends. I have been on a ride with the Knights of the Realms of England. They came out in force at MY urging to give their oaths to the new regent HRH Princess Brianna Tudor. Many of the most famous made an appearance. Why even Lord Torontor was there. It is something the like of which England has not seen in my lifetime at least.

Lord Barrage has asked that the knights make me their Standard Bearer. An honour I never dreamed off. I do not know if it will happen but just to be nominated....

Well I have work to do an honest days work for an honest days pay.

Eat my friends, grow my pets, make me proud.

Jill turned at Sierra's voice, not startled as she'd heard her coming down the stairs. "I made you breakfast! I'm sorry to have caused you so much trouble last night." She laughed as Sierra continued to look stern.

"It's just a sprained ankle. I refuse to be an invalid over it. Will you see about a crutch or cane for me today so I can get around better? And help yourself to those scones - I just made them with the last of the dried currants. We should be able to get fresh fruits soon - strawberries are only a month or so away."

Jill limped to the table with a plate, then seated herself in a chair and started to pour tea for the both of them.

Sierra smiled gratefully at her friend and sat down to the delicious meal. The two women chatted away about the previous night's happening. Jill did an impression of Sierra's failed attempt to scare away the 'burgler', and they both laughed til they had to wipe tears from their eyes.

"Actually Jill, I did need to tell you...I will be traveling to Canterbury in a few days. My cousin Avena is about to give birth and I told her I would lend a hand with the delivery and help out the first few days after the baby was born. Would you mind terribly looking after Luke and the sheep while I am gone? I will be taking Gavin with me as added protection on the road."

She took another bite of her scone and refilled both of their cups from the teapot.

Turning the key in the lock, the fiery haired lass looked about and sighed with contentment. It seemed ages since she was last Home....Home...ah the sweet smell of the forest blanketed in the new growth of Spring. The smell of the grass still damp with dew...the cool damp air enveloped her like a familiar embrace and she was quite at peace.

She was torn between dropping off her things and making a mad dash for Gregarious home and taking time to mull over the letter she held in the leather pouch dangling at her side. It was so fitting that Spring was painting her home with the signs of new birth as she herself had been given a new life ....Her world had changed since the last time she crossed the threshold of her cottage and never again would it be the same. Her hand dropped from the key as it loosed the lock and it once more caressed the soft worn leather of the pouch that carried her freedom, her ticket to a new life and immeasurable happiness.

She bent to lift the heavy metal of the Shield still carefully wrapped in the woolen cloth. It was a fitting gift...crafted to her design...and would be given in love....in time.

The cottage was just as she had left it save the table....

Ells glittering sapphire eyes curiously surveyed the book and the sealed parchment laying by it.....

She first picked up the fine leather bound book and slowly opened it...folded parchment drifted from the pages...she reached for the letter and her eyes softened as she began to read....so like him...so very like him.

A tear from her eye soon rolled across her cheek and stained the ink that spoke the words her heart had longed to know from his lips. Slowly she folded and then tucked it back into the book...His way of making the sacrifice...of making the choice...for her.

she spoke out loud in the silence....

No...no the choice was never yours to make....nor mine...it was ordained...from the start.

with a sigh she lay the book down and slipped the leather pouch from her shoulder and placed it lovingly on top...

then turned to the other missive and lifted it from the table not recognizing the seal having assumed it was Lord Hypno's and a missive from county council.....

Alas...it was not...not at all....

The seal it bore was of HRH the new Regent elect...Ells read the missive twice....

she looked to the pouch and the book...and back to the missive...

The Honor was great...to be sure...but her heart ached...

Just as she laid the directive aside to go wash her face and prepare for a new unexpected journey she heard the Knock at the door.....

her heart skipped a beat as she made her way to the door...wondering...if....perhaps....by some small happenstance....

she turned the knob and opened the door.....

Ellsbeth's expression was one of disappointment when she opened the door and saw Vana standing there.
"Erm, good morning to you," said Vana. "I happened to be passing by and noticed someone was home. This place had been empty for a while, hadn't it? Anyway, I didn't mean to intrude or anything, but I thought I'd let you know that today we may be having a special celebration. It's May Day today. Here, have some flowers."
Vana held out a posy of wild flowers to her. "I'm not begging with them or anything, they're a free gift for you. Take them. I just want everyone to have a nice day today."

Gregarious
Gregarious turns a bend in the road revealing Ellsbeth's home to him as he is returning the two Mules borrowed from Seamus. Vana is just leaving and a curious look is upon Ellsbeth's face.

Gregarious waves a hand to Ellsbeth. It really has been too long. It is difficult being in her presence. But in the end it is more difficult not seeing her. I was a delicate balancing act and one he was not sure he was up to. But it was too good to see her and too late to try and hide. Gregarious calls out as he walked toward the house:

My lady Halliwell, it is truly a pleasure to see you after so long. I trust the journey has been a safe and comfortable one?

Sierra and Jill finished up their breakfast together and then cleaned up the dishes. Jill and she had discussed making something yummy for their fellow citizens in honor of May Day. So Jill sent Sierra out to get some ingredients from the market along with a cane for her to use.

The air smelled clean and fresh as Sierra stepped into the morning sunshine. She quickened her pace to get to the market as well as the carpenter shop so someone could get to work on Jill's cane. The market was a flurry with activity with the usual buying and selling as well as preparations for the festivities. Gregarious had brought in a very nice pole for decorating and a few of the ladies were decorating posts and doorways with fresh flowers.

Sierra was approached by a few ladies and one gentleman with requests for mending of clothes. They wanted to look their best that evening for the dancing. She told them all to come by the shop in about an hour and she would be glad to help them out. She thought about the dress she had been working on for herself for quite some time now...it hung in the back of the shop where she would work on it when she had time. A smile spread across her lips as she thought of wearing it for the first time that evening for the dancing. She hoped she would catch a certain man's eye....

The carpenter told her he would need til that afternoon to finish the cane, so she gathered her purchases and headed home so Jill and she could begin baking. Then it was off to the workshop. So much to be done!

Giangio
Giangio woke up with a smile over his face that morning...the night has gifted him of the most wonderful thing he could have dreamed.....he got dressed bearing that nice smile that only people in romance can have.....he still had the vision of the kiss he gave to Sierrajane and still couldn't believe he got the boldness to act.......he decided he wanted a new hat to be prepared for the dancing the Town hall was preparing for May Day festival, so he headed for the weavers shop whistling and giving the people who meet him on the road a huge smile.....
Giangio knocked on the Workshop's door and slowly entered the shop...he heard Sierrajane voice saying "..come in....I am in the back...I arri....."..
Giangio blushed at Sierrajane words cut and say with his eyes looking down..."I need an elegant hat for the dancing tonight....I need to strike a woman's eye" then with the voice full of hope...."by the way are You goin' tonight??"

Sierra stopped mid-sentence when she saw Giangio standing in front of her. His words caused her to both blush and wonder. She suddenly felt like she were back in school as a girl. Her hands grew clammy and she suddenly had butterflies in her stomach. She obviously knew he liked her after what happened on the porch...but he needed to catch a woman's eye??? Did he mean her or was there someone else? She suddenly felt very flustered and silly for feeling the way she did, but she could not shake the way he made her feel.

"Oh! I...um, yes...I have something over here that I think you would look very nice in. Let me show you."

She went into the back room and Giangio followed her without her realizing it and she went to a shelf to retrieve one of her hats...

"Who is that dress for, Jane???"

Sierra nearly toppled over from surprise at hearing his voice back there. Giangio rushed to her and steadied her with a hand on her back. She turned and their eyes locked for a moment. She held his gaze but then looked away and side-stepped him to walk over to the dress. She lovingly caressed the fabric and Giangio came and stood beside her.

"Try it on for me?"

"What? Now? I um...uh..."

"The dress is yours isn't it?"

"How did you know?"

"The color matches your eyes perfectly..."

She blushed again and mumbled something about him trying on the hat. He smiled and lowered his head and she placed it on. He stood back up and looked at her.

"Well?"

"It looks good. Here. Take a look in the mirror."

He admired his reflection and smiled and then quickly turned back to her.

"Do you like it??"

"It looks very well on you."

"But do You like it??"

He was now standing very close to her again. She could feel his penetrating gaze but she dared not look up at him. She turned from him and said in a quiet voice...

"Yes Giangio, I like it very much indeed."
Giangio
...."You haven't answered my question yet"..Giangio smiled...."Are You coming tonight??.....mmmhhh..obviously You do....I wouldn't like that wonderful dress to be worn by anybody else but You!!"..then he paused for a little moment before letting his voice go again.."Would You like to accompany me tonight??"....then tried to make a funny remark to lessen his impatience ...."that dress surely matches with the hat You want to sell me....."....gazing into SierraJane big eyes longing for a positive answer.....

Sierra had been lost in a momentary daydream, but Giangio's question brought her back to the present.

"Going? Oh yes! Of course I am going....I just needed to finish a couple things on the dress and it will be ready..."

Giangio looked deep into her eyes and her mouth got a bit dry. She cleared her throat a couple times, then shyly looked back at him.

"Why yes Giangio...I would be honored to go with you..."
Giangio
...Giangio gave Sierrajane a full mouth smile....he felt this sudden rush of blood going throu his veins......he stepped in front of her and holding her for her shoulders he gave her a kiss......"..this time is not the moonlight's fault....it is Your shining beauty fault..."......then he stepped back trying to pull himself together saying...."..ehmm...at what time do you want me to come and pick You up???..."....Giangio's heart was full of happiness.....
