= (IRP) The Sword and the Shield

Destini
"Aye," she agreed with Pagan. " 'Tis just like Oddman an' Airiana's weddin'. Only next time, when I return, I promise not to spend the whole time chasing murderers." She offered a soft joke at the end, her smile grinning sadly at her best friend.

Sniffling a little, she broke from Pagan's company for a moment and turned to Jerro. She probably surprised him with a hug, wrapping her arms around her new friend ... although, she made certain she was far more gentle than the great, hugging pewter merchant from Port Lairge. "A great pleasure to meet ye, Jerro." she said as she returned to a respectful distance, blushing a little as she did. "I cannae thank ye enough fer the rescue. Eire needs more people like yerself an' Pagan, people who give their all fer the greater good regardless o' the consequences. I hope we will communicate often."

She looked for Allan, Corwynn, and Richard and found them standing a respectful distance away. She smiled softly to them so they would understand they needn't be strangers at thi, their final farewell. "I expect when next we meet 'twill be on the soil o' mother Eire," she said to Pagan and Jerro both, "But if e'er ye feel like travelin', ye are always welcome to stay in my apartment in Hastings."

Allan seemed to sense the time was appropriate, so he eased his mount up beside destiny, facing Pagan and Jerro in close proximity.

He said, first to Destini, "It is time, dear...." and then to Pagan and Jerro as he clasped their hands in a firm grip, "Travel safe and well, give enemies hell, and let the whiskey spin her spell! We shall meet in less troubled times....."

Allan backed his horse, turned, and led the others down the road towards the ship that waited to take them back to England at last...

Jerro was suprised by Destini's hug, but in a good way. Much more pleasant than the bone shattering embrace of Miss Molly. Jerro nodded to Destini, then Allen, Corwynn and Richard. He couldn't help but feel that he was being cheated out of something good. Still, they had their job to do, and he had his.

As the ship began to depart, he waved to them from the docks. "Travel safe, and come back when ye finish up!" He called across. He stood there waving until the ship was far off into the horizon. Finally, he turned to Pagan. "Well, what do we do now?"

Pagan
Pagan stood quietly on the end of the pier next to Jerro for a long time, waving at Destini, Allan, Corwynn and Richard for as long as she could see them. When her hand got tired she crossed her arms and just stood there, watching the ship as it sailed away to the horizon. For some reason it made her think about Zan, sailing away on that small boat set in ablaze...

Jerro's question snapped her out of her daydreaming. Suddenly she realized how exhausted she was. She felt almost uncontrollable urge to go to rest and sleep, sleep and sleep, for days on end. She was physically battered, bruised and exhausted, but the exhaustion she felt went beyond that. She felt empty inside.

Before Pagan gave an answer to Jerro she looked back at the small dot that was soon about to disappear over the horizon. She tried to detect some emotions within her. What was she feeling? What was she thinking?

Nothing. Nothing at all.

Just spilled booze. That was the truth of it.

Pagan turned to Jerro and said heavily: "Now? Now we go home. Back to our families, friends and fields. Back to living our lives and pretend none of this never happened at all."

But Pagan knew that life would never be exactly the same as it had been before it had started. Not for her and not for Jerro.

She wondered whether Jerro knew it as well.

THE END
