= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Hikenai
Hikenai was happy. She came through the doors of Kel's Bells and immediately began building a fire in the hearth. Soon the morning regulars would be arriving, those who wanted their small ale and a bite to eat before heading off to work. Kel's cook would come bustling through the door shortly. Hikenai quickly rushed to the kitchen to build a fire in the great stove, and brought out the risen dough from the cold pantry. The loaves of wheat, pumpernickel and rye bread, resting in individual bread pans, filled the kitchen with a yeasty smell Hikenai thought especially appealing, almost heartwarming. The cook would arrive and find the stove ready to receive the first batch of fresh bread, and Hik determined she would wrap the first loaf in a fine linen cloth and rush it to Kelster with a cup of thick, creamy buttermilk, which she now poured from the small vat on the side board. Hikenai had enjoyed this routine at Kel's Bells since first arriving in Egremont. And now, as the sky glowed with dawn's brilliance as it seeped, blue and gilded, from the inky blackness of the winter sky Hikenai felt, deep within her heart, a contentment she had not known in months and months.

As Kel walked into the tavern, he noticed the fire already lit and heard a noise coming from the kitchen. Smiling, he knew that Hik had already got here, beat him to opening the tavern. How happy he was to finally have her here, in the tavern which held there future prosperity. She was so good for, turned him around, made his life seem like the storys he had heard of a young man, of everlasting love and the words, lived happily ever after seemed to fit when he thought of her and himself. Smelling the air, he could smell her scent, it always seemed to smell like the finest roses grown in the grounds of Wallace castle.

Hik! Are you there my darling? People should start arriving soon!

Areth
Odo (AKA Areth) comes in playing the flute and sits down on his usual spot.
Looking up he sees Kel and Hik and he stops playing for a while
Before going back to playing the flute he asks Kel

"May I order an Ale?"
And then he remembers that he forgot to say hello. He pull down his hat and says.
"Hello, what beautiful weather there is today!"
He realizes it's out of order to say it that way but what choice does he have? It's already too late to change that.
Hikenai
Hikenai gets Areth his ale and places it on the counter before him. She smiles at Areth and wonders about his flute playing. Where did he learn such haunting melodies? The tunes he plays make her imagination take off and she could listen to him play all day.

Beautiful weather, yes! I was so glad to see the clouds move off. Even though its so cold, the sun does make up for it a little bit! Tis dazzling! Hikenai placed some rolls and a pot of creamy butter on the counter. Eat up, Areth, please help yourself! Hik knew Areth had not ordered any food, but she hoped he might join her and Kel for some buttered rolls. The were hot from the oven!

Odo started to wonder if he had ordered something more than he wanted, confused he answered Hik:
"Yes, thank you, warm food is good when it's as cold as it is outside.
How much for the..."

-Odo stops to think-
"Pie?"
Hoping that Kel and Hik wont be dissapointed in him because of the question he looks down and observes the thing Hik just served him.
Ladylizzy
Voices, why were there voices in her bedroom?

Hard, cold... why was her bed hard and cold?

She turned over, and got her legs entangled in ... things, there was a dull scraping sound, like a chair being dragged across a wooden floor. Why were her legs entangled in a wooden chair?

Thud, her head impacted with something hard she must speak to the maid about the quality of the pillows..

She opened her eyes, and was struck by the fact that her bedroom ceiling looked very like the underside of a table.

She laid still for a while, the 'ceiling' was swooping down towards her and turning in circles above her, and she needed to hang on tight to the world, cos she felt like she might fall off any minute now.

Beer, she had a vague memory of beer... lots of it, some sort of celebration? or was it a commiseration?... there had been singing she knew that for certain... she sniggered, the one about the pirates peg leg had been a doozy!

She stopped sniggering, the whole room sort of bucked and bounced when she sniggered... she groaned softly and laid still again, maybe if she was very very lucky... she might die of alcohol poioning and not have to deal with the hangover?

As they sit down and Hik brings in some hot rolls she has just baked and places some butter beside them, Kel smiles at her. Thanks my darling, this looks so good. Thinking he won't say good enough to eat as he looks at her and not the food, he breaks one of the rolls and takes out his knife, spreading butter on it. Kel looks at odo to see is he is enjoying the food but hears Odo speak.

How much for the...Pie?

Kel then looks at the food before Odo and realizes he has left an old pie on the table he had been saving for his horse, Miss Fortune who had a very strange liking for pies which was so very strange being a horse, but he loved her so much, he had always given her the food she desired.

Hold on odo, I think you are looking at the wrong plate. Taking the old pie away from Odo and moving the roll and the butter in front of his friend, he smiled at him. I am so glad you are back my friend, tuck in, it is so good. With his mouth watering, Kel bit into the hot buttered roll and thanked Jah for Hiks baking, It tasted of heaven.

As they were tucking into the food, Kel thought he heard something. Beer! Looking around to see if he could see anyone, he just saw nothing. Wondering if he was hearing things, he took another drink of his ale and tucked back into his food.

It was sort of like how metal is in the forge... gradually getting brighter and brighter, until the hammer hits it and sparks fly and the noise rings out loud... thats how her head felt right now...

she groaned again, and groped blindly with her hands, she needed something to deaden the pain,
she needed something to dull her senses,
she needed...

Beer!

Somehow she managed to roll onto her front, and pull her knees up under her.

The damned floor wouldn't stay still though, it kept reolving and tipping and she nearly fell off this time! She wrapped her arms around the table leg and clung on tightly, it would stop soon, and she'd try opening her eyes again... soon...

the table leg felt...wrong

Lizzy's head appeared from beneath a nearby table and Hikenai nearly laughed as she called out Beer! in a most plaintive voice. Hikenai rose from her seat and went behind the counter. Drawing up a beer from the fresh keg Kel had just tapped, she also pulled out a special tincture made from primrose flowers and the bark and roots of the willow tree. Here Lizzy, down this with the hair o' the dog, my dear! Hikenai smiled and held the tincture out to Liz. The beer Hikenai slid along the bar until it was directly in front of Ladylizzy. Hikenai smiled at Kel ruefully for he had headaches, too, sometimes. I know just how headaches feel, Liz! And 'twas true, Hikenai did--- for she done some hard drinking recently, with Areth, Rob, Annamcshane, Lil and Kel, and kept it up all that long day. The following day, Hikenai had been too hungover to fish! She had a bit of the hair o' the dog, had started hipsin' to the point she had to leave the bar, and go back to the inn to sleep it off!
The tincture doesn't have a bad taste, Liz, its sweetened with licorice!

Hikenai
Hikenai sat in the warmth of the large arm chair of Kel's Bell's Tavern---the one directly in front of the fireplace---the chair where folks sit when they have a lot on their minds, when they might not want to be disturbed. She sipped the tea she prepared especially for that snowy afternoon, a very sweet blend to which she added liberal doses of the tincture Hikenai now carried everywhere with her. Hikenai had decided to send Ladies Afton, and Blythe, back to Barnstaple, with the rest of the retinue attending her here in Egremont. There was no reason for them to stay on, their services could be put to good use back in Barnstaple. She had written Chrisiusmaximus that only Sir James Bland and his squire, Robert Stafford would stay, to accompany her in her travels around Cumberland, as she visited various friends she'd made while patrolling the border with the Brotherhood.
Hikenai wanted to stop at Merriweather Fortress, even though Snow and Paddy were no longer in residence. She knew they would expect her to stay there as she visited friends in the north, but without them there, she was not sure she would stay. Hikenai sighed heavily, wishing she knew more of her brother's heart. And she sighed again, as she thought of the Blood Oath Brotherhood, and missed her sisters and brothers there most sorely, remembered how she had left them in Chester, ridden north to Egremont, to Kel. There were some who might feel she had run out on her oath, but Hikenai knew she was devoted as ever to their mission. And she had kept the peace in Cumberland, stood ready to fight there. Let them keep the peace in Chester without her, nay, she had sought a leave of absence long before her orders to march out of Barnstaple once again, and long before Chester and Helios had worked out some sort of peace, however uneasy.
Hikenai also could not stop thinking about Su-su. She had written to Havelock Richileau, the child's guardian and benefactor, asking for Su to accompany her and Kel while they were on progress in Cornwall, later in spring and summer. But that was not for several more months, and Hikenai longed for her. Hikenai would have given anything to have had her little foster daughter with her. But Hikenai also knew, that even should the weather been very fair, Brother Rich would not have allowed the child to come to Cumberland with her. She knew she must be patient and pursue legal means to adopt Su-su. She had no legal claim to the little lass. She could not forget having been Su's foster mother for that short time in Barnstaple, however, and Hikenai's heart consticted for a moment, as she missed Su. Now, as Hikenai sat in front of the roaring fire, she remembered another fire, a bon fire in Barnstaple and how happily Su-su had been, all snuggled up before it.

As Kel watches Hik sit by the fire, deep in thought with the light from the flames dancing across her face, he remembers a ballad who had sang the most beautiful song a long time ago and thinks it is just how he feels about his love. From the moment Kelster Wallace first kissed her, he knew, she was the one, his inspiration.

Kel poured two glasses of the whisky he brought back from Scotland, grabbed a chair and went to sit next to her by the fire.Sitting the chair next to her, he offered her a glass and smiled at her.You look deep in thought my darling, are you all right?

The drink seemed to help, and Lizzy sat there, on the floor, beside the bar, half under the table, and watched the romantic scene by the fire... it was...nice. As her head slowely began to clear she pulled herself slowly and tentatively to her feet

"I'll erm, go clean something, or cook something...or something"

she said, wanting to not be a gooseberry, sometimes she felt like she spent half her life as a small prickly green fruit..

She slid behind the bar, not her job, but it was her Cousins tavern, and since she never actually paid for anything she consumed there, she felt she ought to at least do her bit, the bottles looked dusty, she turned her back on the room, and polished things.

Hikenai turned her head to see Kelster offer her a glass of dark amber liquid. Lifting the small glass to her face, she inhaled the sharp nutty scent of the whisky. Placing the glass against her lips, she sipped tentatively, then swallowed, with a gulp and a quick inhalation of breath. The heat that seemed to emanate from that one drink! What potent whisky those Scots distilled! You look deep in thought my darling, are you all right? Hikenai placed her glass on the table beside her. She watched as Ladylizzy struggled to her feet and drifted off in the direction of the back of the counter. Hikenai smiled at the young woman helping her with the more menial tasks. Quite independent, that one! She turned to Kel and took his hand, looked into his eyes and thought how he seemed both very young and very old to her. It's Su, Kel. I miss her so much. We had no sooner gotten her back than I got orders to ride north to Chester. She has spent so much time away from me, and I know she has excellent care, Rich sees to that, but I miss her. Hikenai smiled at Kel. I am glad we shall see her when we return to Barnstaple this early summer. Then perhaps, Richileau will allow us to take her. If her parents are not located.....And Hikenai's face clouded with anxiety as she wondered what could have caused the child to become separated from her mother and father and become lost in the forest? And what of Rich, would he still be so adamantly opposed to Su being adopted by nobility?
Hikenai had to stop and wonder at that. She a penniless girl from outside Madron and Kelster, a humble bartender. When had they become nobility? And in truth, they were not! The peerage was awarded to Chrisiusmaximus, not to her, it only made her the sister of nobility, nothing more. And Kelster, hard working Kelster, nobility! The irony of it, that their rise to better times in life, that would afford them the bounty to share with the orphaned child, was also the vehicle of their most crushing disappointment in not being seriously considered by Rich as prospective adoptive parents for Su.

........if her parents are not located, if no other family can be found, and if Brother Rich can be persuaded, I want us to adopt her as soon as possible after we marry, Kelster. The tears that had begun to start up in Hikenai's eyes, seemed to vanish as she spoke. It was as simple as that, surely, should Su's family not be found. She held Kel's hand and they sat quietly before the fire. Hikenai basked in the certainty that Kel wanted children as much as she did. They could provide a loving and harmonious home for the child and Hikenai was hopeful that Richileau would realize that. Kel, I believe I shall go back to the Inn and write to Brother Rich. I hope he will send us news of Su. I want Rich to know, and for Su, especially to know, I have not forgotten about her this winter. I miss her very much.

As he watches Hik leave, Kel cannot but hope rich will let Su-su come and stay at Wallace castle. Remembering how that sweet little su-su had played before the bonfire in Barnstaple, he so wished she could be here. Kelster Wallace had been thinking about a family for a while now, since he had first kissed Hik, he knew she was the one for him. There family, he thought to himself would be large. The first time he had seen Su he had seen how Hik was with her, he knew she loved Su and it did not take long before Kel fell in love with her too, if only they could adopt her, bring her to Wallace castle and take care of her. Kelster Wallace had always been able to hide his feelings in the past, but now it had become so hard, he so wanted Su to be his and Hiks and knew Hikenai felt the same way. Taking a last swig from his mug of ale, he went to the bar to get another one so to give Hik time to write her letter before he got back.
