= [ORP] The Launce: Launceston Castle

--Bridget
Bridget pulled away from Roberta and dried her eyes, nodding in agreement at Roberta's explanation of what was wrong. "Aye Miss I think I am also just tired. It was a long journey and im not so well travelled."

She glanced quickly at Roberta flashing a look of appreciation at not divulging to much of their conversation. "I shall go and see to my mother and our things and retire."

"Yes, go see to your mother and get some rest. Do not worry about our things we can see to them in the morning." Faith placed her hand on the girls shoulder in an attempt to offer comfort, but Bridget was gone with in moments of being dismissed. She turned to Roberta and smiled sadly. This should have been a far happier moment, arriving finally in Devon to live with family. But the toll of the road on Bridget put a cloud over that joy. It doesn't matter. If Bridget brought the storm clouds, we are about to bring the rain.

Belle gripped at the shall about her shoulders to signal she was cold as she turned to Roberta. "Boo it really is good to see you. I have so much to tell you. Can we perhaps go inside and chat?"

Yes, that is a good idea. Traveling is not easy. I have only traveled around Cornwall, but I am preparing for my honeymoon trip. I am certain it will be tiring as well as enjoyable. The thought of finally being with her husband, even if it was with a small group of people, traveling to visit his family in the north, brought a smile to her face with the anticipation.

She turned to Faith with that smile on her face as Bridget left. That smile left her face as Faith suggested going inside. Her voice seemed different, distant or cold maybe, but definitely with a harder edge to it than when she just spoke to Bridget. Yes, lets go in the front here. I said, waving to the front door. I hope your travel wasn't too hard on any of you. I said conversationally, trying to smile again, but it was the difference in the voices that brought Bridget's concerns validity, and worry to my heart for my cousin.

She knows... you cant tell her!

You dont have the balls to tell her! Either that or you will sugar coat it... Roberta is more intelligent than that and she needs the truth straight up!

Belle smiled as warmly as she could manage to Roberta. With a small inward sigh she made her best attempt at impersonating Faith.
"There is something we need to discuss cousin. There is to be a new addition to the family!" She said with false excitement.

Hearing the excitement in Faith's voice, New addition? Did you find another cousin? remembering that she was only recently returned to the ConDoin family herself. Are you engaged? Or ... I looked at my cousin up and down, are you pregnant? Who is it? I thought you left your husband ages ago... I trail off in a bit of confusion.

Belle snorted and laughed with genuine amusement at the thought of being pregnant, again. She could imagine Christopher would have been overjoyed at finding out Faith had been pregnant, but Faith's miscarriage a year ago would have destroyed him, if he had ever found out. "No my dear," she chuckled "Though i never did manage to tell that ex husband of mine about our failed pregnancy. But you might want to sit down, as this is about a prior pregnancy that no one in the family yet knows about..."

I let Faith lead me to the closest chair and sat down. Faith, what do you mean, a prior pregnancy? And why would the family not know about it? My mind raced as it tried to think of all the implications. I had not known about the failed pregnancy, nor any other pregnancy. But why would I, I had only rejoined the family this past year. Faith tell me, what is this all about?

Belle pulled a chair for herself to sit, directly in front of Roberta so she could look her in the eyes as she spoke. "Boo, you and i have become close in the short time since we have found each other. Part of what i wish to tell you is in confidence, between you and I alone, Jack especially cannot know."

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes and pursing her lips as she formed the words the would speak. Go on, tell her the whole truth if you think she can handle it!

"Roberta..." She used her cousins full name, not the pet name they all referred to her by, hoping to emphasise the gravity of what she was about to say. ".. When my parents where killed in '46, I found myself lost in London, only to be taken in by a high ranking assassin in London's chapter. By the time I was 16 I was initiated into the guild to work as a seductress. When I was 19, I was sent to Oxford on a mission that sent me into a rival guilds territory. I was caught, and when I awoke 3 days later, my chastity belt was gone, and I knew what had happened. It was not long before the guild worked out I was with child. When you are as small as I a baby belly is hard to hide." Belle closed her eyes again and forced back the tears that were threatening her cheeks as she relived the events in her mind.

"The Guild head had it in his mind he would use my child for revenge for what the Oxford boys had done, A son of Oxford would have been chopped to pieces and sent to them in a box. A daughter would simply have been raised by the guild to be just another harlot. I did not care at first, but as the child grew with in I had a change of heart. With the help of my midwife, I was able to arrange hiding the child."

"On February 10th, 1452, Morgaine ConDoin was born, declared dead, and whisked away to Ludlow, where my midwife Viviane has raised her in secret until I was able to escape the guild to come and claim the her."
Belle sat back and folded her arms across her chest. The one thing that could penetrate her hard exterior was her daughter. She sunk back into oblivion, allowing Faith to finish.

"Boo, I have promised the child for the last time that I will come for her. I wish to bring her here."

Faith sat in front of me and told her tale. I started to frown as she told me that some of what she would tell me was to be hidden from our cousin Jack. But when she spoke my given name, one she never used, and told me of her life as an assassin, I blinked. I stared at her and just blinked. My mind didn't want to take in what she was saying, but it meshed with what Bridget had already said and intimated.

With her telling of her rape, my eyes teared up, my hand went to my mouth. Oh dear Jah! I whispered. For her to have secreted her daughter for seven years, from her family, friends, and this assassins' guild, was shocking. You wish to bring her here? Faith, I love you. You are my kin as is .. Morgaine? I looked at her questioningly, making sure of the name of the child. Are you claiming her now? What will this guild do if they find out who the child is? I want no trouble for my people here, Cousin. What are your plans for your daughter, Faith ConDoin?

Outside of shock, Faith had no idea what reaction to expect from her cousin. She had been preparing herself for the reality that her family would disown her at such news, and she would flee back to the woods where Morgaine was raised and stay there with the child and Viviane. She nodded to Roberta as she spoke the child's name accurately, almost as though she were testing the name on her lips. Roberta's flurry of questions followed, and Faith was eager to answer them all. With a warm smile in her eyes as well as on her lips she started... "I wish to claim her now, acknowledge her publicly. She is now of a noble house. I wish to raise her as a mother should. But Boo, should any thing happen to me... " Her face darkened as she paused, and her voice deepened as Belle pushed her way back to the surface to speak of death once more "...you will have no trouble from the guild. I intend to destroy them...or at least Darius she thought.

"I ask this of you Boo, I have one last mission to complete to ensure Morgaine's safety. When you return from your honeymoon with Chris, collect her, she awaits in Lichfield. I will finish what they started seven years ago, so she and the rest of the ConDoin's will be safe... But if i do not return... Will you and Chris take her in and raise her as your own?"

Chris and I had yet to speak of out own children, although Misty had hinted a Time or two that she wanted to be an aunt. To be asked to care for a child not our own, whom we hadn't met, let alone know about before, it was an overwhelming thought. Faith, this is much that you ask of Chris and I. We haven't even talked about having children of our own, yet. The look on Faith's face told of a quiet despiration. I sighed. I can only hope that Chris will forgive me for this, but I will accept the care of Morgaine, should the need arise. I can only say I will ask Chris if he will accept your daughter as ours. I looked at Faith's face and wondered if, nae when, I would end up caring for this waif of a girl she spoke of.

Belle gave a curt nod. Despite the request to care for Morgaine should she not return, she had every intention of seeing her child grow to adulthood. "There is much to be done. I will write to Viviane and let her know you will come for her. In the mean time I must go. Bridget will stay here and mind our places." She got up quickly from her seat and started to head out of the room, leaving Roberta to the confusion and doubt she was surely feeling.

"Do not worry Boo... Morgaine is very bright. But also very shy. She will not cause trouble. But I will be back to care for her." She said, her tone changing one last time before she left the room.

My head spun with the new information and the realization that I had committed Chris and I to raising an unknown child if Faith ever passed from this earth. My emotions were running rampant. Tears sprang to my eyes. I stood and placed my hand upon my desk, realizing only then that I was in my office. I sat back down and wept. I wept for the child that had not known her mother all this time. I wept for the obvious changes in Faith. I wept for the struggle poor Bridget must have gone through these last few months.

After I calmed myself, I stepped from my office and called Jane. Jane, it seems that there will be another resident here. It seems that Lord Chris and I will be picking up a young lady on our way back home. Please arrange a room for a young girl about Miss Lily's age in the family wing. Lady Faith may be able to give you some direction as to what the child may like. Take your time, I will write when we are closer to knowing when we will be returning.

Jane nodded in slight confusion, but would carry out the instructions given. I dismissed her and returned to check on all things that needed to be packed. Cook cared for Bridget's mother til Bridget was able to settle her in her room. Geoff had the cart packed for the trip, and the wagon packed to move things to the Manor. I could only hope that Faith and Bridget would care for the Launce as I had cared for it.

Dearest Roberta (Boo),

I have just been informed that my cousin Tika, in Ireland, is extremely ill. She believes it is the result of the plague that took Ros, were she lived. She tells me her husband is also ill. Neither are expected to live, and if they do, they will be too weak to care for their twin children, Dónal Ion & Ceilí Fíona.

She has asked me to get the babies as she doesn't want them going to an orphanage and the only other relative there has already taken in another's children. I have my own to care for, but I was hoping that you would be willing to care for them in my stead. I have not heard that the political situation is good in Ireland. I can only hope you and your husband, Chris, would agree.

Please write to me and let me know your decision.

Love,

Tansy

I rode to the Launce gates with Duchess pulling the cart. Ian was on duty at the gate. Mi'Lady, we weren't expectin' ya, but tis a pleasure to have ye home. He opened the gates for us and we traveled into the courtyard.

Geoff was in the smithy and saw us pull up to the stables. Lady Boo! You're home. He helped me off the cart. Oh! you have brought guests. Jane will have to set rooms in the guest wing.

Geoff, these are more than guests. This is Donal, I said as I lifted him off the cart, and this is Ceili. Children, this is my blacksmith, Geoff. Geoff, these are my children. Chris and I adopted them in Egremont. I heard the cart shift, as Sarah moved to get off the cart. And this is Sarah Cathain, the children's nanny.

Geoff stepped forward to Sarah, May I help you down, miss? He was smiling up at her.
