= [ORP] The Launce: Launceston Castle

Lady_roberta
The castle was located just outside of Launceston, heading towards Barnstaple. Lady Roberta "Boo" Bettys had been granted not only the title of Viscountess of Launceston, but the Launceston Castle as well.

As she and Geoff looked over the grounds, she found not only a decent castle, but a fine smithy area. It seemed that the last blacksmith had left a few of his tools behind, some she didn't have yet, but knew their uses from her apprenticeship.

She knew this would be such a large home for her alone, but she had not seen J-darst in so long, she feared he had surely become a monk himself, he had been in retreat so long and away from her and Launceston. Her life was moving fast these days. First, her title of Baroness of Dartmoor, then becoming Duchess of Cornwall. Through her contacts at court and through other counties, she found that her past was not fully what she thought it was.

She was part of a family. Not just any family, but one that included some of her best friends in Cornwall! She was a Condoin! Imagine her surprise when in passing, she mentioned this bit of information to Jack.. er... Prince Jack, and he informed her that HE was a Condoin cousin! and half brother to Treena!

After talking to Treena, and comparing notes, Boo, or Roberta as she had come to find out, was sister to Robert Condoin! another acquaintance of hers from Cornwall. She heard that Robert was heading back home for a time and had stopped off in Somerset. She began writing him letters, and he her. They couldn't wait to meet in the tavern when he returned to Cornwall.

This big castle, too big for herself alone. Maybe her new-found family would visit her here.

While cleaning the castle, room by room with Geoff's help, Bobbi (she was coming to like this name) received a letter. At first she thought it might be another letter from her brother, Robert, but she didn't immediately recognize the handwriting.

Report of the War

Dear LadyBoo,

Following is a report I have compiled of the events ongoing in the war in Cumberland, I have had to omit some details due to ongoing operations.

How is life back home Boo, we hear tales of our home town struggling to find suitable Mayoral candidates, this worries both myself and Misty greatly, tugging at the heart strings wanting to be there to help out but knowing we are needed up here desperately.

Things are desperate here Boo, the air is filled with hatred, the enemy fights well with words and morale is low.

How are things within the CUC ? has there been progress made on those matters we spoke of before I headed North ?

We are all missing our friends back home so if you would pass along our well wishes to all in Cornwall I have told the troops I would ask this of you, plus any news for them in return would im sure boost their morale.

Lastly dear Boo how are you, I hope council duties are not wearing you down so much now, you served us all well as Countess but I know how big a strain that position can be, I hope this missive finds you in rude health my Lady.

warmest Regards

Chrisius

She had almost forgotten that she had asked Chrisius to relay to the council, through her, reports of the war in the north. The report she rolled to take with her to the next meeting of the County Council. The letter she placed on her desk to be answered at her next convenient moment.

As work as Sheriff and her work in her smithy has kept her busy, Bobbi has had little time to write the letter to Lord Chrisius as she had wished.

She hoped with a little more time she would get the letter written and posted to him soon.

Finally after a long term as sheriff, Roberta was able to return to the castle she had newly claimed with her title.

She would relax for a bit, before she was needed for Court duty as Judge.

M'lady, We're home. Geoff called back to her. He didn't hear a reply so he turned around. Lady Boo? 'Ey Boo? BOO.
Her head snapped up, the dreamy glaze slowly left her eyes as she focused on Geoff. Home? Alright.
'Eh. Ye told Sir Chris you'd go riding with 'im, Miss.
OH! I have to change then.... Could you get Duchess saddled for me? I should be down swiftly. She grabbed her skirts and hurried off the carriage and into the castle. She slowed half way up the stairs to a walk. On her way she grabbed a maid to follow her. As she undressed she told the maid, Mary, take this gown to be brushed. And I think there is a wine stain on the sleeve hem. She went to her wardrobe and got out her riding outfit. She hoped Chris didn't mind that is was trousers. She knew some of the maids looked askance at her when she wore them, but they were so comfortable on horse back.

Coming up the road to Launceston a white horse approached. Approaching nearer, one could see the rider wore a wide-brimmed feathered cap and fine threads. It didn't take one long to realize who might be coming down the road. (Psst, it's Jack).

He tied off his horse and approached the gatehouse of Launceston Castle on foot to speak with the guard.

"Greetings, Jack Ashbrook, sir, I was wondering if the Lady of the castle were-- well-- home."

He rested on the stone archway awaiting a response.

Roberta nearly flew down the steps to the main hall. She wanted to get back to Barnstaple and on a ride with Chris. She stopped in the kitchen to stock up on a few edible necessities, a hard sausage, a loaf of hard bread, a small crock of fresh butter, a small wheel of hard cheese. She also carefully bundled up 2 glasses and a bottle of wine. This would all fit snuggly in her saddle bags. Janet? Do we have a spare lawn blanket? Roberta asked the cook.

The last one was took to the stables.. Should still be there, Mum.

Ahh good! I will pick it up then. She walked out of the kitchen to the courtyard. She spied the horse at the gate and at first thought it might be Chris come to pick her up here. But a second look told her that the man on the back of the horse was not her Chris. Geoff, come get these and pack them in the bags. Grab the lawn blanket in the stables as well. Could you roll it and tie it to the saddle? Your such a help, Geoff. She smiled at him as he looked a bit bewildered, but went off to do as he was bid.

Roberta walked to the gate, forgetting that she was wearing trousers and a jacket. She spoke to the guard first. Ian, who do we have her-- ... Jack? She stopped as she saw who was standing in front of her. She squealed in delight and ran to him and gave him a big hug. What has you out this way, Cousin?

Jack was chuckling to himself as he reached to remove his hat. Suddenly, he heard a squeal of his name and was caught off-guard by the hug.

"Oof."

He returned the hug,

"How are you cousin? It's been a while since we last spoke."

He stepped back and inspected the riding outfit.

"As it were, I was taking the long route back from Penhallam. On my way, I thought I would stop in and visit my dear cousin, now Lady of Launceston, I see. Congratulations."

He dusted off his cloak.

"It seems you were stepping out for a ride?"

Aye, tis a long time. I am well. Better than well, but that is for later. Roberta waved away her thoughts of Chris for the moment.

Thank you, Cousin. And, yes. I am readying to meet Lord Bedford for a country ride. Where are you heading? Maybe we could ride together? We could pass the time with our respective news.

"Lord Bedford...," he mulled, "He is in Barnstaple, of course?"

"If you are headed in that direction, I'd be glad to ride with you. I am on my way toward Exeter, at present, and the company would be delightful."

Jack inspected his hat and smoothed the feather before donning it again.

He walked toward his horse, opening his arms gesturing at it and turning back to Roberta, he asked with a large smile on his face,

"Ah! This horse! What do you think of it?"

For his own part, the horse did his best to pretend that a man was not waving his arms in front of him, as the horse nuzzled about the ground looking for grass.

"Isn't it a marvelous creature?" he continued, turning back toward the horse, quite without pausing for a response, "It was a gift, you know...."

He left off, somewhat distracted, with a feeling in his gut that was not entirely new, but whose presence was so far removed from the present that it felt as uncomfortable to him now as the voices had been when they first began. With his back to his cousin, he regained his composure, adjusted his hat, and turned back with a smile.

Yes. I was just there for the dePeche Manor Ball. I was sorry not to see you or my brother there. But it was a grand time. Roberta couldn't help but smile broadly at her memories of the ball.

As Jack walked to his horse, Roberta turned and saw Geoff coming out with her packed horse. She waved him over and took the reigns. Thank you Geoff. Can you make sure the next order is started for the axes? You're a dear.

It is a fine animal, Jack. A gift you say? From any one I know? Or is it a secret admirer? she giggled, thinking of the 'gift' of Chris's love for her.

Shall we ride, Jack? You can tell me about your Gift Horse on the way. I certainly hope you didn't look in its mouth. She couldn't help but laugh at her own little witticism.

Jack smiled at her wit, laughing when she mentioned "looking it in the mouth",

"Yes, that was the exact expression I was thinking about when I was presented this horse, and it was all I could do to keep from looking to spite myself. I've always wondered what they've got in there that is so special," he jokes, knowing full well it is the teeth.

"Ah, yes, the Ball. I came to hear of the celebration just as I was re-entering Cornwall-- after it had ended, of course," he laughs, "though I am upset that I missed it, I have heard word about town that it was quite the occasion-- the "social event of the season", you might say."

He winks.

"Sadly, I was detoured on my way back to Cornwall to-- well, I'm sure everyone about England already knows why-- to visit someone."

As he recalls those days' events, his heart picks up pace. He pauses, unable to understand these racing feelings. When standing in front of a jeering crowd, debating an enraged opponent, speaking with someone he knows he's wronged, his heart races, his chest tightens, breathing becomes difficult, his thoughts become fractured and now, thinking back he is having the same reaction....

He coughs,

"Yes, you know I went to visit Emmy, the same who you recall was very critical of my regency-- don't get upset, sometimes it's good to introduce a little perspective."

He chuckles,

"Now, a lot of people expected that we were going to duel in the street or something, but, of course, these were simply rumors. We had a rather honest and mind-opening conversation, we explained our positions and in the end, I believe we parted on good terms...."

He felt his heart beating. He thought, "We did part on good terms.... We forgave one another, we exchanged gifts-- granted, champagne for a horse might be a bit of a stretch-- so why am I still so anxious?"

With this running bout of energy, he turned toward Roberta, smiling again,

"Well, enough about me, my dear cousin, let me ask about you. You seem to be in incredibly high spirits. If this is what the ball at the DePeche Manor did to you then I am extremely sorry to have missed it!"

He did not know what lead him on to the next statement, perhaps it was her smile, perhaps it was her spirit-- perhaps it was her eagerness to return to Barnstaple-- but he asked, with a laugh,

"Why, if I didn't know, I'd say you met someone."

Roberta laughed with him about the horse jokes. She felt comfortable around Jack. They had always been friends and neither one really stood on the formalities of their titles when alone, especially with them being cousins. Yes, it was quite spectacular with food and dancing and intruders and fireworks, both in the manor and out, she giggled.

She gave Jack a quizzical glance at his mention of meeting someone. EMMY?! Emmy de Grey? Upset? Jack, how can I not be upset, she wanted your neck in a noose! Do you forget I was there as your Secretary? She was shocked, but listened to a bit more. Roberta sighed at the thought of Jack and Emmy dueling in the streets. I say, Jack, you have to be one of the most contrary men I know. Do you really believe that you two parted on good terms? Can anyone be on good terms with that woman? I wonder.

She shook her head at it all. Well, at least you are away from her now. No harm done I suppose. It is better to have one less person trying to kill you than not.

Roberta smiled at Jack as he mentioned the Ball again, then blushed furiously at his guess. Well, Jack. I guess you will be the first in the family to know. I have met someone. Someone we all know well. She paused, letting what she was about to say sink in to her first as it was still so new. Chrisius is courting me. It is Chris that I am on my way to meet for a bit of a ride in the country-side. She looked at Jack a moment, her gaze a bit dreamy. I believe I am in love, Jack. I haven't felt this happy since before I got into politics. She shook her head a bit, smiling. I have known Chris most of my life in Cornwall, but all our discussions, or arguments, were political. We never got to know each other. Now I want to know everything about him.

As she said this, Jack looked introspectively at his horse's calf and muttered,

"Yes, I suppose...."

As she continued with joy in her heart, he felt a moment of surprise, so this is why she wanted to see Lord Bedford so soon!

"Well, cousin, this certainly is very exciting news. I will certainly have to ride with you and give Lord Chris a hard time."

He grinned.

"And did politics really get you down so much?"

{continued from A Country Ride}

I ran into the manor, GEOFF! Where are you?

Geoff came out of the kitchen just in time to catch me from knocking him over. Lady Boo, you're back! Are you hurt? What is wrong?

Oh Geoff! Everything is RIGHT with the world! I give him a big hug, which I don't notice embarrasses him. I release him and with the brightest glow on my face, I am engaged!

Geoff mistook her comment, Yes, M'Lady, you are engaged as the Spokesperson for the County.

I shake my head at Geoff, laughing. Geoff, No. I laugh again with pure joy. Chris, Lord Beford, has asked me to marry him, Geoff! And I said YES! I danced around in delight.

That is wonderful news, Lady Boo!

I need to sleep now. But tomorrow I will have to start writing invitations for our engagement party here. Despite my resolve, I yawned. It is definitely time for sleep. I will see you in the morning Geoff.
